چکیده

We construct comparable measures of intergenerational mobility (IM) for 103 Italian provinces using the methodology of Güell, Rodŕıguez Mora and Telmer (2007; 2014) and explore their correlation with a variety of social and economic outcomes. We find that higher IM is positively associated with economic activity, education and social capital, and negatively correlated with inequality. Moreover, there is no clear pattern of correlation with other socio-political variables. These results are qualitatively similar to Chetty, Hendren, Kline, and Saez (2014), with the important difference that Italy is a highly centralized state where institutions and policies are ‘de jure’ the same in all provinces. This suggests that something beyond institutional and policy differences also shapes intergenerational mobility.

We characterize opportunity–equalizing mobility processes, and provide simple...

Economic Change and Resource Matching: Non-Whites in Britain and France

Non-whites in West Europe face diverse economic outcomes that are insufficiently explained by current literature. The paradoxes of these economic outcomes are especially glaring when one considers change over time, and the downward mobility of Caribbeans in Britain and France. Common explanations of race and class do not work because in both countries non-Caribbean groups are the most discrimin...
